CEILING TILES REDUCE REVERBERATION
NEWS MUSEUM IN WASHINGTON, D.C. OUTFITTED WITH SQUARELINE® METAL CEILING TILES
MINNEAPOLIS — Off-Broadway theatergoers expect a certain edge to their experience, and theater owners are expected to create an appealing ambience on a limited budget. Both of those expectations were met when the New World Stages in Times Square in New York City had pinta acoustic’s SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles installed in its lobby.
“SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles are perfect for our locale — in the heart of the New York Off-Broadway theater district, surrounded by steel and concrete, hustle and bustle on the streets and underground,” says Dennis Walls, operations manager at New World Stages.
| “A central aesthetic focus in the Newseum is transparency, and black SQUARELINE ceiling tiles fit the look perfectly,” says Paul Gallagher from C.J. Coakley, the ceiling tile installation company. “SQUARELINE is a very sound-friendly solution because the open mesh pattern of the tiles allows sound to get trapped in the plenum space. A traditional metal hard ceiling would have created additional unwanted sound reverberation.” |

The Newseum application included framed and frameless standard and custom-sized ceiling tiles. SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles were modified to accommodate strip light fixtures and structural posts and hooks to support suspended display objects and a video screen. Ceiling heights in the spaces where SQUARELINE was installed vary from 10 feet to 60 feet.
SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles have a recycled material content between 35 and 55 percent, which qualifies them for LEED® credits. SQUARELINE tiles are constructed of expanded metal in three patterns: standard, medium and ultra mesh. The patterns have open areas, respectively, of 68.2 percent, 62.5 percent and 71.4 percent. Ultra—the largest mesh pattern in the product line—was selected for the Newseum.
The ceiling tiles can be ordered with or without a willtec® FM acoustical backer, which is prebonded to the metal tile. When equipped with an acoustical backer, SQUARELINE has a Noise Reduction Coefficiency of 0.55 to 0.60, depending on the thickness of the backer.
SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles in the standard mesh pattern are available in a beveled or flat profile, with white or chrome metal and optional light grey or charcoal acoustical backer. SQUARELINE medium and ultra have a flat profile and are available in chrome metal with optional light grey or charcoal backer. SQUARELINE ceiling tiles are offered in 24-inch by 24-inch, 24-inch by 48-inch, 48-inch by 48-inch, and custom sizes. They drop easily into pinta acoustic or other standard ceiling grids and can be installed at any stage of construction.
SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles are durable and Class 1 fire-rated.
The 250,000-square-foot Newseum offers visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with state-of-the-art technology and hands-on exhibits. Located between the White House and the U.S. Capitol adjacent to the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, the Newseum features a 74-foot-high marble engraving of the First Amendment on its exterior and an immense front wall of glass. On seven levels of galleries and theaters, museumgoers get behind-the-scenes experiences of how and why news is made.
