ACOUSTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR ART GALLERY

SONEX VALUELINE ACOUSTIC PANELS CORRECT CIRCA GALLERY’S ‘LIVELINESS FOR A VISUAL AND ACOUSTIC PLEASURE

MINNEAPOLIS—Only days before its grand reopening, Circa Gallery in Minneapolis found its new space too loud and “lively.” A call to pinta acoustic, inc. and a quick installation of SONEX Valueline acoustic panels the day before the reopening solved the problem. Now, the contemporary art gallery has the right amount of “liveliness” and is more attractive to visitors’ eyes and ears.

“While our new gallery space was under construction and full of materials, we didn’t notice how noisy it was,” says Russ Belk, owner of Circa Gallery. “When the space was finished, we noticed that you could whisper in one corner and hear it in another corner. That environment is much too “live” for a gallery.

“My business partner’s husband—who works in printing—suggested pinta’s acoustic materials. So we placed an emergency call for help,” says Belk. “A gallery space should be neutral so the focus is on the art. Our space is all white with a poured cement ceiling. It was a big plus that pinta had white acoustic tiles to blend with the ceiling.”

Circa Gallery installed 72 SONEX Valueline Panels in white on the ceiling, above the pipes, in the 2,000-square-foot space. The panels were mounted in a checkerboard pattern. Circa staff attached the panels themselves—with guidance from pinta acoustic—using pinta’s acouSTIC adhesive.

SONEX Valueline Panels offer excellent acoustical control across all frequencies, with Noise Reduction Coefficients (NRC) ranging from 0.75 to 1.05. They are especially effective at absorbing excessive sound at the middle frequencies (500 and 1,000 Hz), where unwanted noise and reverberation can interfere with communication.

“We opened in October 2007, the night after installing the SONEX panels,” says Belk. “Now the space looks and sounds the way we want. In fact, it’s better than I thought it would be. We’ve had deejays and music in the space, and the acoustics is great. I think acoustic problems are much more pervasive than people think. I’m glad this solution worked so wonderfully for us.”

Virtually every type of interior space needs some type of acoustical control to ensure the comfort and safety of the people who will spend time there. For example, even the most well-designed office will be an unproductive place if people are bothered by noise from adjacent hallways. Who wants to eat a special dinner at a restaurant where conversation is lost in the clattering of dishes?

pinta acoustic offers a wide range of products to solve the unique acoustical challenges presented by a wide range of interior spaces including: gymnasiums and multi-purpose rooms, offices, restaurants, entertainment facilities, music rooms, retail spaces, airports, stadiums, swimming pools, and classrooms.
