PEACEFUL BEAUTY TO TIDEWATER JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER
As you enter The Reba and Sam Sandler Family Campus of the Tidewater Jewish Community you are surrounded by a dramatic atrium called the “Cardo” which connects to the center’s meeting rooms and activity areas. The campus includes an early childhood center, classrooms, science labs, media center, café, competitive-sized basketball gymnasium and many other indoor and outdoor facilities. To ensure that the state-of-the-art contemporary facility in Virginia Beach, Va., was acoustically sound to facilitate varied, simultaneous activities under one roof; the project architect consulted an acoustical expert who recommended pinta acoustic products.
| “The facility has large open areas, which tend to have echo problems,” says Paul Turok, architect. “Our acoustical consultant recommended pinta products — primarily for ceiling applications. This approach seemed like a functional solution to an anticipated problem. And it turned out beautifully. The sound control is fabulous, and the product is an aesthetic complement to this award-winning campus.” |

Turok notes that The Reba and Sam Sandler Family Campus of the Tidewater Jewish Community received a merit award for a non-residential development from the Virginia Beach Planning Commission.
White Hypalon®-coated CONTOUR® Ceiling Tiles in the classic pattern were installed in the atrium area of the facility, which features a 28-foot inverted V-shaped ceiling. The sound issues inherent in the atrium’s hard surfaces — wood columns and accents, tile floor and Jerusalem sandstone walls — are offset by 900 square feet of CONTOUR Ceiling Tiles.
“We wanted a white ceiling that would reflect the abundant natural light in the space,” says Turok. “CONTOUR Ceiling Tiles also provided the acoustical control needed to make the atrium a suitable gathering space.”
CONTOUR Ceiling Tiles in the BASIX pattern were installed in the dining room and auditorium.
“Auditoriums require acoustical excellence because listening is a primary activity in such spaces, and speech intelligibility of speakers is important,” says Turok. “The dining room, which required more than 700 square feet of acoustical ceiling product, was subject to noise from the adjacent kitchen, the sound of dishes and silverware clattering, and conversation.”
CONTOUR Ceiling Tiles provide exceptional performance and acoustical control, with a NRC (noise-reduction control) as high as 1.20 and CAC (ceiling attenuation class) of 34. The regulation-size gymnasium was treated with 115 FABRITEC™ Wall Panels adhered to the walls. In addition, 114 FABRITEC Baffles were hung from the ceiling on a suspension system. Both products were selected to absorb sound in this traditionally noisy space.
“Like most gyms, this one features a wood floor and an open-grid, metal ceiling — a sound quality nightmare,” says Turok. “It made sense to add sound absorption materials that also complement the color scheme of the space — FABRITEC Wall Panels and FABRITEC Baffles.”
